Methylated folic acid – the active form of folic acid, which is absorbed much more quickly and easily by the body compared with the ordinary form. Folic acid is of essential importance for the proper development of the foetus and for carrying the pregnancy to term. During the first month of intrauterine development, a structure called the neural tube forms in the embryo, from which the spine and the central nervous system subsequently develop. In spina bifida, the vertebrae that cover the spinal cord do not close properly. The exact causes of this have not been established categorically, but it is certain that the greatest risk factor for the appearance of spina bifida is insufficient intake of folic acid before and during pregnancy. This is precisely why the intake of a sufficient quantity of easily absorbable folic acid is of vital importance for the health of the baby. Folic acid also contributes to better quality of the egg cells and correspondingly easier conception – that is, intake of the vitamin increases reproductive capacity.
B-group vitamins – this group of vitamins takes part in a large number of metabolic chains and is of great importance for the nourishment of the foetus, as well as for the proper course of the reproductive processes. Vitamin B12 stimulates the development of the red blood cells that carry oxygen to the brain.
