Emselex

Emselex is a medicinal product containing the active substance darifenacin. It is used for the treatment of adult patients with overactive bladder syndrome (OAB)—a condition characterized by a group of symptoms associated with impaired bladder control. The most common symptom is a sudden and urgent need to urinate that the patient is unable to control or delay. In some cases, this condition may lead to involuntary urine leakage (urinary incontinence).

Description

Emselex is a medicinal product containing the active substance darifenacin. It is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with overactive bladder syndrome (OAB)—a clinical syndrome characterized by a group of symptoms, most commonly including a sudden and urgent need to urinate that cannot be controlled or postponed. In some cases, this may lead to involuntary urine leakage (urinary incontinence).
Emselex is a modified-release formulation, providing gradual and sustained release of the active substance throughout the day. The recommended starting dose is 7.5 mg once daily. In some patients, this dose may not provide sufficient symptom relief, and the dose may be increased to 15 mg daily.
The active substance in Emselex, darifenacin, is an anticholinergic agent that selectively blocks the muscarinic M3 receptor. This leads to relaxation of the muscles responsible for expelling urine from the bladder. As a result, bladder capacity increases, the threshold volume for bladder contractions is raised, and the frequency of detrusor muscle contractions is reduced. In this way, Emselex helps prevent unwanted urges to urinate and episodes of urinary incontinence.
The main benefits of Emselex are related to its high selectivity for muscarinic M3 receptors and its prolonged-release pharmaceutical formulation. This selectivity contributes to the lack of effect on cognitive function, which is particularly important in elderly patients.
